Hearing loss due to old age can be gradual and this is why some older adults are unaware that they may be experiencing hearing loss. If this is what you’re going through or are seeing happen to an elderly loved one, we are here to help.

Hearing loss in the elderly, also known as presbycusis, is a common condition affecting older individuals due to natural ageing processes. The gradual loss of hearing occurs over time and affects their ability to hear high-pitched sounds.
There are several causes of hearing loss in the elderly:
The ageing process itself is a significant factor in hearing loss. As we age, the tiny hair cells in the inner ear responsible for detecting sound can become damaged or die off, leading to a reduced ability to hear.
Repeated exposure to loud noises over your lifetime can contribute to hearing impairment in old age. This includes exposure to loud music, noisy work environments, or recreational activities such as attending loud concerts.
Certain genetic factors can make individuals more susceptible to hearing loss as they age. If there is a family history of hearing loss, there may also be a higher likelihood of experiencing it.
Certain conditions can contribute to loss of hearing in old age. These may include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and ototoxic medications (drugs that can damage the inner ear)
Excessive build-up of earwax can lead to hearing loss by blocking the ear canal and preventing sound from reaching the inner ear.
You must consult a hearing care professional to determine the most appropriate treatment options based on your circumstances. They can assess the severity of your hearing loss, conduct a comprehensive diagnosis, and recommend the best course of action to improve your hearing and overall quality of life.
